MARPOL Annex VI, first adopted in 1997, limits the main air pollutants contained in ships exhaust gas, including sulphur oxides (SO x) and nitrous oxides (NO x), and prohibits deliberate emissions of ozone depleting substances (ODS). The International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) is the main international convention covering prevention of pollution of the marine environment by ships from operational or accidental causes. The MARPOL Convention was adopted on 2 November 1973 at IMO. (See MARPOL Annex VI – Compliance by ECGS and MARPOL Annex VI – Regulation 4) Regulation 14 general requirements 1 The sulphur content of any fuel oil used on board ships shall not exceed the following limits:.1 4.50% m/m prior to 1 January 2012; MARPOL Annex VI is the part of the IMO (International Maritime Organization) Marine Pollution Convention that seeks to address: the impact of air pollution from shipping activities on human health and the environment the impact of emissions from shipping activities on climate change and ozone layer depletion. MARPOL Annex VI – Regulations for the Prevention of Air Pollution from Ships MARPOL 73/78, Annex VI outlines international requirements for vessel air emissions and shipboard air pollution prevention measures. Annex VI enters into force for the United States on January 8, 2009. MARPOL Annex VI – Compliance by ECGS Regulation 14 of MARPOL Annex VI places limits on the sulphur content of fuel as a way of defining SOx emissions and unlike Regulation 13 for NOx, specific emissions limits (grams SOx per kilowatt hour) are not given.

In 1979, the Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution, the "first international legally binding instrument to deal with problems of air pollution" was signed. In 1997 the regulations regarding air pollution from ships as described in Annex VI of the MARPOL Convention were adopted.

In 1997 the regulations regarding air pollution from ships as described in Annex VI of the MARPOL Convention were adopted. New MARPOL amendments adopted by Resolution MEPC.286(71) include two new emission control areas (ECAs) for NOx, and amend the information to be included in the bunker delivery note (BDN).
